Drone capturing progress on a construction site

How to Hire a Construction Drone Provider

A practical guide to choosing the right drone partner for progress monitoring, earthworks, BIM comparison and inspections.

Hiring a public safety drone provider is best done before an incident. Decide what mission you need supported, how fast they must respond, and what evidence, data and credential requirements apply — then send every provider the same brief.

1. Define the mission

State the mission type (search, fire, scene reconstruction, damage assessment, DFR, training), the jurisdiction, operating environment and whether this is pre-planned, urgent procurement or a standing on-call arrangement.

2. Set availability expectations

Agree the mobilization window, service radius, hours of availability and how the provider is activated. Never rely on a directory listing during an active emergency — call 911 or follow agency procedures.

3. Check credentials and airspace

Ask for Part 107 certificates, any COA, waivers or special government interest (SGI) experience, insurance certificates and named pilots. Confirm whether the work falls under your agency's COA or the provider's Part 107 operation.

4. Confirm data, evidence and equipment

Agree evidence handling and chain of custody, data hosting and retention, and any equipment restrictions such as NDAA or Blue UAS requirements before the first flight.

5. Compare on the same scope

Use our request form so every provider receives identical requirements, then compare mission experience, response times, deliverables and price.

Questions to Ask Every Provider

  • • What is your mobilization window and service radius, and how are you activated?
  • • Which credentials, COA or waiver experience and insurance limits can you document?
  • • What aircraft and sensors will you use, and are they NDAA / Blue UAS compliant if we require it?
  • • How do you handle evidence, chain of custody, data hosting and retention?
  • • Which deliverables and file formats will we receive, and how quickly?
